Change Story. Why isn't my team moving?

A division lead, four weeks out from the all-hands. The decision is made: the legacy systems are going, team lines are being redrawn, eighteen months on the clock. The roadmap is planned down to the last detail. And still she asks me: why isn’t my team moving?

I think the answer is easy to state and hard to practice. Facts inform. Stories move. A roadmap explains what is going to happen. A change story makes people feel why today has run its course, and it says out loud what will remain.

We work with six guiding questions for this: the Change Story, a PUETTGEN framework, drawn by Till Lassmann. In the carousel: five observations from working with it.

Food for thought.

So here is my question. When a change announcement falls flat in your organization, what is usually missing: the picture of tomorrow, or any mention of what stays?
